Sandton is the financial and business hub of South Africa and the continent. Our client identified a prime site in the heart of this district and requested that the practice work with the Architects to develop an urban language commensurate with the importance and character of the area for a large mixed-use project consisting of commercial, residential, retail and hotel elements over a super basement.
The urban design language that we proposed was simple, crisp and robust, yet also of a high quality that provided opportunities within the design to showcase the work of local artists to both local and international users.
A challenging aspect of the proposed scheme was the design, development and integration of a large number of skylights, required to bring natural light into the retail level and the primary urban square, which we proposed as sculptural feature elements.
